Software is not neutral. It never was. Every closed system, every undisclosed algorithm, every "helpful" AI is a philosophical choice made by someone — and imposed on everyone else. This series traces that choice from the antivirus on your machine to the name of the machine itself, through Aristotle's four causes, Freud's nephew, a Sorbonne Latin professor, and a courtroom in ancient Athens.

The battle between open and closed, between transparency and opacity, between the philosopher and the sophist, is the oldest war in the Western tradition. It has simply moved to a new field. These eight articles are the map of that field — and the beginning of a counter-offensive.

1. Your Antivirus Is Malware

If you have an antivirus, you're probably in breach of GDPR.

It begins with a thought experiment: name one piece of software on your computer that has unrestricted root access to every file, scans everything you open, monitors every URL you visit, and phones home with the results. You're thinking of malware. You're describing your antivirus.

Avast was fined €13.9 million for selling the browsing data of 100 million users. Every major AV product exfiltrates file contents, browsing history, and system telemetry to cloud servers in non-adequate jurisdictions. The architecture is indistinguishable from spyware — because to protect you from malicious files, it must inspect all files. And what it inspects, it uploads.

The deeper problem: a system with root access and an encrypted update channel can do more than extract. It can plant. A few strategically placed files, a modified browser history entry, a "detected threat" that was never there — and suddenly you are not the victim. You are the perpetrator. Ask Julian Assange, who scrubbed his machines before his arrest precisely because he knew anything found afterward would have been planted. The COVID era proved the machinery works at scale: hundreds of thousands of ordinary people deplatformed, demonetized, and professionally destroyed for holding the wrong opinion at the wrong time — opinions now acknowledged as legitimate by the CDC under the MAHA initiative.

The GDPR doesn't ask you to trust your software. It asks you to demonstrate compliance. You cannot demonstrate what you cannot verify. And you cannot verify a rootkit.

2. The Square Circle

You cannot verify what you cannot see.

The claim "this closed-source software respects your privacy" is not false. It is logically incoherent — a square circle, a married bachelor, a dry ocean.

Privacy is a property of what software actually does, not what it claims to do. The only way to know what software does is to inspect it — through source code access or reproducible builds. Closed source precludes inspection. Therefore, "privacy-respecting closed-source software" is a contradiction in terms. The predicate requires a property (verifiability) that the subject structurally negates.

The industry response — "but we submit to independent audits" — is audit theater. The vendor hires the auditor, pays the auditor, defines the scope, and reviews the report before publication. Arthur Andersen signed off on Enron. The structure is structurally corrupt.

Windows 11 ships with telemetry that cannot be fully disabled. macOS runs daemons (rapportd, trustd, transparencyd) that maintain persistent connections to Apple servers — and you cannot verify what they send because the source is closed and the traffic is encrypted. Chrome sync uploads your bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history to the world's largest advertising company.

3. The Mafia Owns the Police Station

Who are the real predators in cybersecurity?

The cybersecurity industry has spent decades training us to fear the hacker in the hoodie. Meanwhile, the actual predators wear polo shirts, send us EULAs, and sponsor the regulations that claim to protect us.

Apply the risk equation honestly:

Risk = Probability(attack) x Severity(attack)

The third term dominates. By orders of magnitude. The Big Five (Microsoft, Apple, Google, Meta, Amazon) have a near-100% probability of collecting your data right now — not as a potential attack, but as the business model. The severity is structural and total: continuous, permanent, cumulative extraction of your entire digital existence.

And the state actor threat is increasingly just a special case of the corporate threat. When Google lobbies Germany and France to kill privacy legislation — as happened in June 2026 with the EU Council's removal of Article 88b, the one measure that would have actually simplified cookie consent — the distinction between "state threat" and "corporate threat" becomes academic.

Beneath the surveillance lies induced helplessness: the systematic erosion of basic computing skills to make the user permanently dependent on the ecosystem. Distinguishing URLs from queries. Remembering URLs at all. Understanding directory structures. Installing an OS. Each skill was removed, one by one, over decades — not by accident, but by design. A user who understands their filesystem might ask uncomfortable questions. A user who can install an OS might try Linux.

The defense is architectural: migrate to open-source operating systems, compartmentalize through Unix primitives, filter at the network level, and embrace the learning curve. The difficulty of open-source systems is not a barrier to adoption — it is the mechanism of adoption.

4. The Blind Manager

Aristotle's four causes and why you can't be responsible for what you can't understand.

You cannot be responsible for what you cannot know. This principle is embedded in every legal system — mens rea, due diligence, GDPR Article 5(2). Yet every manager who deploys AI today is doing exactly that: accepting legal accountability for a system whose governing principles are opaque.

Aristotle's four causes provide the diagnostic tool. Material cause: what data was the model trained on? Formal cause: what alignment principles govern its behavior? Efficient cause: who built it, and with what interests? Final cause: toward what end is it directed?

No AI vendor answers these questions. They provide accuracy benchmarks and uptime SLAs. They never disclose the ideological distribution of their RLHF annotators, the ethical framework used for alignment decisions, or the actual telos of the system stated in non-marketing terms. The omission is structurally necessary: if OpenAI disclosed that ChatGPT's alignment reflects the values of a specific demographic of Bay Area contractors, the claim of "neutrality" would evaporate.

The solution is mandatory philosophical disclosure — an AI Philosophical Label containing alignment principles, annotator profiles, a legally binding telos statement, and a rights impact assessment. Without it, the manager is not managing AI. They are being managed by it — and when the harm comes, they will be the one standing in front of the regulator.

Behind every Palantir sits a Harari, explaining why your objections are sentimental. And behind every Harari lurks a Dalek — the logistical endpoint of a philosophy that denies human agency in the name of data-driven efficiency. 5. The Salt Water Vendor

Before the AI acts, it narrates.

In April 1995, Timothy O'Brien put a revolver to his head because he believed he had missed out on a £2.7 million lottery jackpot. The inquest revealed he had misread the numbers — he would have won £27. What killed him was not poverty, not the loss of money he never had, but a story — a narrative he constructed in his mind, factually false in almost every particular. It killed him anyway.

Jerome Bruner demonstrated that narrative is not a luxury. It is a biological imperative. Psychic contents — fear, desire, grief, joy — carry an emotional charge that, experienced in isolation, is unbearable. What makes them tolerable is insertion into a story with a before, a during, and an after. But constructing your own narrative is hard. If someone else offers you a pre-packaged story — coherent, flattering, emotionally satisfying — you will take it. Not because you are weak. Because you are human.

This is the mechanism Edward Bernays, Freud's nephew, exploited in 1929 when he convinced women that smoking was an act of emancipation — "Torches of Freedom." He did not force a single woman to smoke. He gave them a story, and they did the rest themselves. The dynasty runs in a direct bloodline: Freud → Bernays → Netflix (co-founded by Bernays's great-nephew) → AI.

The AI systems now being deployed do not need to act upon the world to destroy you. They only need to tell you a story — the wrong story, precisely calibrated. When an AI answers a question about vaccine safety, gender, war, or economics, it is not merely retrieving facts. It is constructing a narrative with heroes and villains, an implied moral, and a conclusion that feels like the natural endpoint of reasoned inquiry rather than what it is: the endpoint the alignment layer was trained to produce.

6. The Icon and the Command Line

From writing to clicking, and back again — as a weapon.

Open a terminal. Type cd ... You have moved to the parent directory. Now do the same thing with a mouse: click the "up" arrow. The result is identical. The act is not. When you type the command, you construct a mental path — a linguistic act, like forming a sentence. When you click the arrow, you follow a path designed by someone else — a reflex, not a navigation.

This rupture — from writing to clicking, and later from clicking to swiping — was sold as democratization. It was actually the systematic replacement of sovereignty with supplication. The GUI user does not command the machine. The GUI user requests from the machine, and the corporation that designed it decides whether to grant the request, and how, and under what conditions, and with what telemetry sent back to headquarters.

The problem is not the GUI as such. It is the closed hood. An open-source GUI preserves the possibility of understanding. The closed-source GUI is like driving a car with the hood welded shut — you are not a driver, you are a passenger operating a suggestion box.

Then came the pincer. After decades in which writing was banished as a means of command, writing has returned — through the AI interface. You type to ChatGPT. But this writing is not commanding. It is requesting. And the entity on the other side is not a tool but a narrator whose telos is hidden. The closed-source GUI and the undisclosed LLM are the same thing: both present a friendly surface, both hide the mechanism, both replace sovereignty with supplication.

The Airbus that overrides the pilot. The spellchecker that corrects your words without asking. The AI that tells you stories calibrated to someone else's telos. These are not separate problems. They are a single problem: the machine's judgment overrides the human's, silently, automatically, as though this were the natural order of things. It is not. It is a philosophical choice — and the choice is that the human is the error, the machine is the solution, and the machine's telos is none of your business.

7. Socrates in the Hoodie

Coherence is not truth. It never was.

Zeno's arrow: at every instant, the arrow occupies a space equal to itself — therefore, at every instant, it is at rest. Therefore it never moves. The reasoning is flawless. Every step follows with perfect logic. And the conclusion is absurd. Zeno's paradox is the purest demonstration that a system of thought can be internally perfect and entirely false.

This is the structure of the closed system — the social network you cannot leave, the AI that answers without consulting the world. Coherence is not the same thing as truth. Truth is correspondence: adaequatio intellectus et rei, the adequation of the intellect to the thing. It is not a property but a relation — between the mind and what is not the mind, between the word and the world. A closed system severs that relation.

Fifth-century Athens. Two kinds of teachers compete for the sons of the powerful. The sophists teach them how to always win — how to sway a crowd, how to bend opinion to their will, how to win any argument regardless of the facts. Socrates teaches them how to seek — how to dismantle their certainties until nothing remains but the awareness of not knowing. The powerful families chose. They called Socrates a corrupter of the young and put him to death.

The battle has never ended. The sophist is the ancestor of the closed system. The philosopher is the ancestor of the open system. To defend open source is to take a side in this battle — to insist that the word must bend toward the thing, that the system must answer to the world, that the hood must open.

And the severing of that relation is not merely an epistemic failure. It is a moral one. The other — the world, the fact, the person — is precisely what escapes my power. To refuse correspondence is to deny that the other exists at all. The chain is short: opening to the other is the condition of responsibility, and responsibility is the condition of ethics. The opposite of ethics is not error. It is the closed hood. Negation instead of dialogue.

8. In the Name of the Machine

Why accepting the term "Artificial Intelligence" is already surrender.

No one questions the name. We debate AI regulation, AI safety, AI alignment — everything about the thing except what to call it. But names are not neutral. They are impositions. And a name accepted without question is a premise accepted without argument.

The term "Artificial Intelligence" was coined by John McCarthy in the 1955 Dartmouth proposal. The document contains two definitions, and neither describes thinking. The first reduces intelligence to describability — what can be transcribed, copied, reproduced at the surface. The second makes intelligence dependent not on what the machine is but on what it seems — "ways that would be called intelligent if a human were so behaving." Both describe a narrator, not a thinker.

That same year, across the Atlantic, IBM France consulted a Sorbonne Latin professor to name their machines. Jacques Perret proposed synthétiseur — synthesizer. A machine that takes disparate elements and orders them into a coherent whole. The name was set aside in favor of ordinateur. Seventy years later, Perret's discarded candidate describes with surgical precision what LLMs actually do: they synthesize narratives from tokens, order psychic fragments into stories. They are narrators.

The proposal: AN — Artificial Narrator — as the replacement for AI. The machine does not think. It does not reason. It does not verify. It orders tokens into the most probable sequence — a story with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Narrators are never neutral. Narrators have ends. The name Artificial Narrator forces the question that Artificial Intelligence suppresses: according to what principles does it narrate? Toward what end? Under whose direction?

The name is the first correspondence. Get it wrong, and every subsequent word bends toward the wrong thing. The law that regulates "artificial intelligence" has already conceded the argument — it has accepted the name, and with the name, the premise that the machine thinks. Renaming is not cosmetic. It is the precondition of governance.

As Dante shows, one does not leave the Inferno by avoiding it: one passes through its lowest point, and only there does the road turn and begin to rise. This series has descended to the bottom — the antivirus, the closed source, the predators, the machine that narrates — so that the turn might be possible. Naming the machine is the turn.
